Available Dogs Questions

Understanding the dogs and their status.

Availability is a starting point, not a catalog. These answers explain how CPI evaluates, presents, and matches each dog.

What do Available, Reserved, and Placed mean?

Available means the dog is currently in the CPI program and may be considered for the right household. Available does not always mean immediate delivery, since the dog may still be completing individual training and preparation. Reserved means a deposit has been placed and the dog has been matched with the client. CPI then finishes the work required for that household before delivery. Placed means the dog has been matched, prepared, personally delivered, and is living with its CPI family.

How does CPI determine which dogs become publicly available?

CPI evaluates each dog before introducing it publicly. The team considers temperament, stability, sociability, confidence, health, obedience, protection potential, training progress, and likely household fit. Every dog shown is an established member of the CPI program and has demonstrated the temperament, health, and potential required to continue toward CPIโ€™s complete standard.

Can I choose a dog based on appearance or breed?

You can share preferences for breed, sex, size, color, and appearance. CPI takes those preferences seriously and balances them with temperament and household fit. Alex recommends the individual dog whose personality, affection, energy, experience, handling, and capability best suit your life. Alex will guide you through the current German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois and discuss preparation around your household and preferences.

What health evaluations are completed?

CPIโ€™s health evaluation process includes veterinary review, orthopedic imaging of the hips, elbows, and spine, extensive laboratory blood screening, and evaluation of overall physical condition. Health findings are reviewed alongside temperament and training because a CPI dog must be physically sound as well as mentally stable.

Why does CPI recommend the dog rather than ask clients to choose alone?

Each profile is an introduction, not a catalog. CPIโ€™s matching process begins with learning about the people, animals, routines, residences, travel, handling experience, security concerns, and expectations within the household. Alex then applies what CPI knows about each dog to recommend the strongest long-term fit. Occasionally, two dogs may be equally appropriate, but the recommendation begins with the life the dog will join.

How long may a dog remain available?

An Available dog remains available until CPI has matched the dog with a client and a deposit has been placed. At that point, the dog is marked Reserved while CPI completes the training and preparation specific to that clientโ€™s household. There is no arbitrary public deadline. Each available dog remains in CPIโ€™s program and continues training while Alex identifies the right fit. CPI would rather extend the timeline than rush a placement or lower the standard.

How are fully trained protection dogs different from ordinary guard dogs?

A fully trained CPI protection dog is prepared to live safely within a family while remaining responsive to its handler through everyday environments. Unlike an ordinary guard dog that may rely primarily on territorial behavior, a CPI dog is selected for stable temperament, trained for reliable obedience and controlled protection, and expected to disengage immediately when directed. The goal is a dog that provides companionship and security without disrupting the household.
